Home » Expectant Parents » Recommendations for the TDaP (Tetnus/Diptheria/acellular Pertussis) Vaccine for Adults
According to the Centers for Disease Control, pregnant women should receive a dose of TDaP during each pregnancy. This enables the maternal pertussis antibodies to transfer to the newborn. This is important because the newborn is immediately protected from getting pertussis even before the baby receives the DTaP recommended vaccine series. The TDaP vaccine also helps to protect the new mother at delivery. This means that she will be less likely to transmit pertussis to her baby.
Equally important is for members of the family, whether it is the father, grandparents, or siblings to also receive the appropriate vaccine. Other caregivers for the baby should also be up-to-date with their pertussis vaccines. A person’s age will determine whether the DTaP or the TDaP is given.
It is important to have this vaccine before coming into close contact with the baby. If as a new mother you have not received the TDaP or you do not know if you have, it is recommended that you receive the vaccine immediately after giving birth. For further questions, contact your obstetrician or primary care physician.
